(KFYI News) -- The Jodi Arias case has hit a speed bump.  Arias has asked for a continuance, but it's not clear why. Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery says defendants who represent themselves generally put prosecutors in an awkward position.

"Prosecutors, then, really have to walk two different paths," Montgomery says. "One, to make sure that we're representing our case appropriately. But, then, the other one is to make sure that, in some instances, we're having to look out for the defendant too."

The continuance motion will be heard August 22nd. Arias was convicted last year of murdering Travis Alexander in 2008. She's facing the death penalty.
