(KFYI News) – A homeless veteran is dead after getting hit on his bicycle in Mesa.

Police say it happened around 5:00 Friday afternoon on Apache Trail near 82nd Street.

The 60-year-old man was riding his bike when he was hit by a truck.  The truck driver left the scene, but a witness got his license plate number, and 28-year-old Derrick Tinsley was arrested a little while later at his home.

Witnesses say Tinsley was driving erratically and swerving across all lanes of traffic.

Friends say the victim had lived in Mesa for about twenty years, and had recently become homeless. His name was not immediately released.
